Early menopause increases the risk of bladder cancer for smokers - this was the finding of an interdisciplinary research group, led by urologist Mohammad Abufaraj from MedUni Vienna's Department of Urology and Division of Epidemiology and other international university hospitals, using data from 230,000 participants in the longitudinal Nurses' Health Studies I and II.
Using a rodent model to examine the long-term effects of a potential malaria vaccine, a new study published in PLoS Biology by researchers at Penn State University shows that the vaccine could lead to the development of more virulent forms of malaria, the PLoS blog "Biologue" reports.
AnaptysBio, Inc., a privately-held therapeutic antibody company, today announced that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has extended its contract with AnaptysBio to generate additional high affinity thermally stable antibodies for biodefense applications. This extension was awarded based upon the successful completion by AnaptysBio of milestones during the first year of the contract.
SV40 does not have a role in the majority of malignant mesotheliomas - a cancer associated with exposure to asbestos – according to a study in this month's Cancer Research. The study, led by Mount Sinai School of Medicine researchers used a scrupulous protocol that eliminated contamination that has likely been the reason previous studies have implicated SV40 in this cancer.
The elderly suffer more serious complications from infections and benefit less from vaccination than the general population.
