Malaria parasites that develop resistance to the most effective class of anti-malarial drugs may become susceptible to other treatments as a result. The discovery could reveal potential new drug options, which would be essential in the event of resistance to the best anti-malarials.
New research from Georgetown University Medical Center suggests that the brain may not have developed a specific ability for "understanding faces" but instead uses the same kind of pattern recognition techniques to distinguish between people as it uses to search for differences between other groups of objects, such as plants, animals and cars.
Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease worldwide, and approximately 40% (1 billion) of adults aged 25 and above have been diagnosed with hypertension. A positive correlation between salt intake and blood pressure has long been postulated.
Patients with existing chronic pain syndromes experience a significant increase in pain when they are exposed to media coverage of terrorist missile attacks, researchers say.
The Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) has commenced a Phase I clinical trial in healthy adults in Paris, France, to determine the safety and tolerability of a promising oral drug candidate Oxaborole SCYX-7158, to treat human African trypanosomiasis (HAT, or sleeping sickness) for stage 1 and stage 2 of the disease.
