University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine researchers have uncovered a genetic basis for fundamental differences between humans and other vertebrates that could also help explain why humans are susceptible to diseases not found in other species.
Hypnosurgery using hypnosis for pain control has been gaining acceptance over recent years in medicine in the UK and other parts of the world. In addition to pain control, hypnosurgery can provide a range of other benefits such as anxiety reduction, less complications during surgery and faster recovery times.
A recent international study fails to support the common belief that the number of calories burned in physical activity is a key factor in rising rates of obesity.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the eyes and brains of 27 astronauts who have spent prolonged periods of time in space revealed optical abnormalities similar to those that can occur in intracranial hypertension of unknown cause, a potentially serious condition in which pressure builds within the skull.
A microscope about the size of a penny is giving scientists a new window into the everyday activity of cells within the spinal cord.
