Laurie T. Krug, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Stony Brook University, is the first early career scientist to be named Stony Brook University Discovery Prize Fellow, a new philanthropically-sponsored award established to fund high-risk, high-reward basic research projects.
On January 27, 2010 the FDA cleared the Haemonetics 510(k) for its expanded nomogram to collect two Red Blood Cells on the Cymbal® Automated Blood Collection System from female donors who are at least 150 pounds and are 63 inches in height. The Cymbal is a small, portable, battery operated instrument that automates blood collection from volunteer donors, improving process control and helping alleviate blood shortages.
There are about 10 million cases of TB globally each year and 1 in 3 people are infected with the TB bacterium. BCG is the most widely used vaccine worldwide, but its mechanism of protection is poorly understood. It is thought to prevent progression of infection to active TB but whether it protects against the acquisition of infection itself has not been investigated in humans.
Clemson University researcher James Morris received a $360,079 competitive renewal grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue his study of Trypanosoma brucei, the single-celled parasite that causes African sleeping sickness.
