In a study published online in Nature Medicine, scientists from the hospital's Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine found they could speed up wound healing in diabetic mice by keeping immune cells called neutrophils from producing bacteria-trapping neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs).
According to a new study from the George Institute for Global Health, women who have larger waists compared to their hips are at a greater risk of heart attacks than men who have a similar shape. A larger waist compared to hips is typically called the "apple shape". The study appeared in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Heart Association and was sourced by data and other aids by UK Biobank.
The use of Vitamin D supplements can help to protect against acute respiratory infections, according to a new study. If everybody took the supplements, more than three million people could ward off colds and flu every year, say the authors of the world-wide, collaborative study.
Researchers have long known of the brain's ability to learn based on visual motion input, and a recent study has uncovered more insight into where the learning occurs. The brain first perceives changes in visual input (local motion) in the primary visual cortex. The local motion signals are then integrated in the later visual processing stages and interpreted as global motion in the higher-level processes.
