According to the Australian Nurses Federation (ANF) there are more than 18,000 reports of accidental needle stick injuries to nurses caused by syringes or other sharp items in Australia each year. This increases their risk of contracting deadly blood borne diseases like HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C etc. The authorities believe that these figures although alarming are not reflective of the true figures with many nurses choosing to keep their exposure under wraps.

Study reveals how SAMHD1 works to protect dendritic cells from HIV virus

A novel discovery by researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center and colleagues reveals a mechanism by which the immune system tries to halt the spread of HIV. Harnessing this mechanism may open up new paths for therapeutic research aimed at slowing the virus' progression to AIDS. The study appears online ahead of print today in Nature Immunology.

Strong work ethic and sense of place delays elderly heart patients from seeking care

A strong work ethic and sense of place appear to influence how elderly rural Albertans with congestive heart failure manage their illness, in that these values may delay them from seeking help at critical times, a University of Alberta study shows.
