Brain stimulation, already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and essential tremor, has now been shown to offer significant relief to patients with intractable seizures for whom drugs and other treatments have not worked.
It would appear reasonable to assume that two closely related plant species would have similar genetic blueprints. However, scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in T-bingen, working in cooperation with an international research team have now decoded, for the first time, the entire genome of the lyre-leaved rock cress (Arabidopsis lyrata), a close relative of the thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana), the model plant used by geneticists.
Cardiola AG announced today that the Company's CE-Marked m.pulse® Muscular CounterPulsation ("MCP")-based system demonstrated "an immediate improvement of cardiac output with non-invasive means" in a patient population of advanced yet stable chronic heart failure. The effects could be shown in 22 patients over three consecutive days.
TeamHealth announced today the acquisition of Rhode Island Emergency Physicians (RIEP), the emergency physician group that staffs the emergency department at South County Hospital in Wakefield, Rhode Island. South County Hospital chose TeamHealth, who will work with the existing group of physicians to provide management and staffing services for the hospital's 30,000 annual patient volume emergency department.
University of Houston researchers have devised a new method for extracting molecules from live cells without disrupting cell development, work that could provide new avenues for the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases.
