Within a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of Route 128, a revolutionary new way to provide elder care is quietly making a difference in the town of Westwood. From the outside, the White Oak Cottages may look like ordinary, modern family homes with lots of windows and skylights but what's going on inside is anything but ordinary. Their mission is to de-institutionalize long-term care by providing a real home-like environment for those with Alzheimer's, Dementia and other cognitive impairments.
The American Heart Association has awarded Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine $60,666 for cardiac research in 2012, bringing the lifetime total the AHA has awarded to Loyola to more than $10 million.
Imagine trying to lie down and rest but feeling an uncontrollable urge to keep moving your legs. That, in a nutshell, is the ongoing ordeal facing people with restless legs syndrome. Considered a neurological, sleep, or movement disorder, RLS affects up to 1 in 10 people in the U.S. For those coping with a more severe form of RLS, countless sleepless nights-during which they may toss and turn constantly, or get up and pace the floor-can shatter quality of life.
The 32nd Congress of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) concluded today in London (September 14-17) and one of the late breaking sessions presented the Clinical Guideline on the pharmacological management of people with Multiple Sclerosis developed jointly by ECTRIMS and European Academy of Neurology (EAN).
Patients treated at UMDNJ-University Hospital for heart failure receive some of the best care in the nation, according to newly released rankings. The data, from the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), place the hospital among the top five academic medical centers in the nation for treating heart failure patients with recommended care. This care was measured in the areas of discharge instructions, appropriate prescriptions of heart failure medications at discharge, evaluation of left heart function, and adult smoking cessation advice/counseling.
