Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) have identified an enzyme that appears to be a significant regulator of breast cancer development. Called PTPN23, the enzyme is a member of a family called protein tyrosine phosphatases, or PTPs, that plays a fundamental role in switching cell signaling on and off.
Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in her lifetime. Among the various types, triple-negative breast cancer is the rarest and most aggressive – affecting about 15 percent of breast cancer patients. It is also the least studied.
Ethicon Endo-Surgery today announced the company won a Gold 2009 International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) for the research and design process used in the development of the HARMONIC FOCUS(TM) Curved Shear.
The standard regimens to treat tuberculosis (TB) are inadequate in countries with high rates of multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB. In countries with high rates of MDR-TB, patients are nearly twice as likely to fail their initial treatment than those in countries with low rates, according to a new analysis of World Health Organization (WHO) data. This finding suggests strongly that current TB treatment regimens need to updated and revised to address the shifting landscape of public health in the face of MDR-TB.
When mum or dad puffs on a cigarette, their infants may inhale the resulting second-hand smoke. Now, scientists have detected cancer-causing chemicals associated with tobacco smoke in the urine of nearly half the babies of smoking parents.
