New research finds that airborne bacterial communities differ from one urban park to the next but those of parking lots are alike - and differ from those of parks in subtle but potentially important ways.
"A network of global health research training institutions will increasingly focus on the rising levels of chronic diseases in developing countries, the National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center announced on Wednesday," CQ HealthBeat reports (Bristol, 4/4).
Kaiser Permanente, the largest health care provider in Northern California, today announced a $10.5 million investment in the Oakland community that is designed to help school children stay healthier as they learn, help them increase their attendance rates and academic performance, and teach them about humanitarian leaders who succeeded in making positive differences in their communities.
A team of researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine and four other institutions have found that young children with documented or likely allergies to milk and/or eggs, whose families were instructed on how to avoid these and other foods, still experienced allergic reactions at a rate of almost once per year. Of severe cases, less than a third received epinephrine, a medication used to counter anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic condition.
A third of breast cancer survivors who received the breast-conserving treatments lumpectomy and radiation rate the appearance of their post-treatment breast as only "fair" or "poor" in comparison to their untreated breast, according to a new University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine study that will be presented today at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in San Diego.
