The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is calling for nominations for its 2011 Award for Excellence in Health Promotion. Introduced in 2003, this award recognizes those outside the health sector who have made a significant contribution toward a healthy population and a healthy community.

Newly identified germline variations in a key tumor suppressor gene predispose individuals to develop leukemia as children and leave them with a 1-in-4 chance of developing a second cancer later. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital scientists led the study, which appears today in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Modern hearing aids, though quite sophisticated, still do not faithfully reproduce sound as hearing people perceive it.
Researchers have found that more than half the cases of non-hereditary or sporadic schizophrenia are caused by "new" protein-altering gene mutations. These mutations are new genetic errors that appear in patients but not in either of their parents, the researchers explained in the report published in the Aug. 7 online edition of the journal Nature Genetics.
