The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) announced today that it has awarded a grant of $240,000 to AgeneBio Inc. to develop a new class of small-molecules that have promise in treating amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), a neurological condition that often progresses to Alzheimer's disease and affects more than 3 million aging Americans.
The National Cancer Institute has awarded a four-year, more than $1.87 million grant to University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers to study the impact of implementing financial navigation services at five rural cancer centers in North Carolina to help patients cope with the financial burden, or financial toxicity, related to cancer care.
The combined cost of malpractice - and doctors' efforts to avoid it by practicing so-called defensive medicine - costs about $55.6 billion a year, or 2.4 percent of total health spending, according to a new analysis by "Harvard University's Atul Gawande and co-authors, Bloomberg reports. "The yearly price of so-called defensive medicine - tests, visits and procedures performed to reduce litigation risk - is about $45.6 billion, the authors said today in the journal Health Affairs, in a report using 2008 dollars."
Very few treatments or therapies endured by cancer patients can be described as pleasant, but a study published in Arts & Health shows the positive impact of using music as a personal coping method when faced with the disease.
