A new clinical trial designed by Maile Young Karris, MD, internal medicine physician and infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego Health, seeks to discover whether people living with HIV can benefit from emotional support offered by a virtual community, and from physical support and services delivered by community volunteers.
Researchers led by Adam T. Hirsh of the School of Science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis report that black and white Americans cope with pain differently and that blacks employ pain coping strategies more frequently than whites. The IUPUI review and analysis of 19 studies is the first to examine the entire published literature and quantify the relationship between race and the use of pain-coping strategies.
Researchers from The Miriam Hospital have studied the effects of smoking during pregnancy and its impact on the stress response in newborn babies. Their research indicates that newborns of mothers who smoke cigarettes during pregnancy show lower levels of stress hormones, lowered stress response, and alterations in DNA for a gene that regulates passage of stress hormones from mother to fetus.
Pfizer has announced that a Danish court has granted a preliminary injunction against Nomeco A/S - the largest pharmaceutical wholesaler in Denmark - that prohibits the sale of a generic version of Lipitor by generics manufacturer Ranbaxy.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded nationally prominent Oregon Health & Science University reproductive scientist Jeffrey T.
