A team of researchers at the Salk Institute has found two therapeutic targets for the deadly type of lung cancer, non-small-cell lung carcinomas (NSCLCs), which accounts for 85 percent of all lung cancer cases. They believe that the breakthrough discovery could pave the way for the development of new treatments for a majority of lung cancer patients.
After nearly two decades building her company into the industry leader for third-party review of dental insurance claims, Dianne Rose, D.D.S., and principal of P&R Dental Strategies, Inc., was frustrated. In spite of many advances over the years in both dental x-ray technologies and the average quality of images supplied for review of dental claims, there was no consistency and, all-too-often, regardless of how up-to-date the x-ray equipment being used may have been, the images supplied were blurred and nearly useless for making accurate diagnostic determinations.
A study by researchers from Loma Linda University School of Public Health and the Czech Republic has found that timing and frequency of meals play a role in predicting weight loss or gain.
An international team of scientists, led by the University of Sydney, has found the molecular structure in the body which functions as our "shock absorber". The discovery of the previously unknown part of the molecule will be applied to the researchers' work on designing improved versions of a human blood vessel and on repairing skin damage, including burns.
Despite recent advances in understanding the mechanisms of nerve injury, tissue-engineering solutions for repairing damage in the central nervous system (CNS) remain elusive, owing to the crucial and complex role played by the neural stem cell (NSC) niche. This zone, in which stem cells are retained after embryonic development for the production of new cells, exerts a tight control over many crucial tasks such as growth promotion and the recreation of essential biochemical and physical cues for neural cell differentiation.
