An autoimmune attack on uninfected red blood cells likely contributes to anaemia - a shortage of red blood cells - in people with malaria, according to a new study published in eLife.
Stand-alone surgical centers in York County as well as the entire state have tripled in the past decade, according to a report released earlier this month by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, The York Dispatch reports.
For nearly two decades, the medical world and the American public have grappled with the lightning-rod topic of stem cells, in particular the controversy surrounding cells from human embryos. But when researchers four years ago successfully "reprogrammed" adult body cells to become stem cells, some thought the ethical debate was nearly over. Those redirected cells, known as induced pluripotent cells, or iPS cells, show potential as therapy.
According to a recent University of Helsinki study, disordered eating among young adults has long-term effects on their health. Disordered eating among 24-year-old women and men was an indicator of higher body weight, larger waist circumference, and lower psychological wellbeing as well as a lower self-evaluation of general health both at age 24 and ten years later.
