When the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation began offering telehealth services in Montana in early February, the nation's largest nonprofit addiction treatment provider promised quality care for far-flung residents without their even having to leave home.
NIBIB-supported researchers have created tiny gel particles that can perform the same essential functions as platelets. The particles could one day be used to control excessive bleeding following traumatic injury or in individuals with impaired clotting due to an inherited condition or as a result of certain medications or chemotherapy.
As many as 75 percent of women have uterine fibroids (leiomyomas), and approximately one-third to one-half of those women become symptomatic at some point during their reproductive lives - experiencing irregular uterine bleeding, anemia, pelvic pain or recurrent pregnancy loss.
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and New York University have discovered a gene mutation in fruit flies that alters sensitivity to crack cocaine and also regulates their internal body clock.
