A team of scientists has discovered a new syndrome associated with severe congenital neutropenia (SCN), a rare disorder in which children lack sufficient infection-fighting white cells, and identified the genetic cause of the syndrome: mutations in the gene Glucose-6-phosphatase, catalytic subunit 3 (G6PC3).
New results from a large retrospective study of the National Cancer Institute's SEER database show that patients with cancer who were married at the time of diagnosis live markedly longer compared to unmarried patients.
Nearly half of all men in a new study about intimate partner violence in male couples report being victims of abuse.
Public health research data "must be made more widely available in the scientific community if researchers are to unlock its full potential and make progress in public health, the world's top health funding agencies said Monday," Reuters reports. "In a joint statement, 17 major health research funders from around the world pledged to work together to support 'timely and responsible' sharing of data gathered during studies on health," the news service notes (Kelland, 1/10).
