Three billion years ago, a "new" amino acid was added to the alphabet of 20 that commonly make up proteins in organisms today.
Stroke survivors with higher scores on widely used outcome measures are more likely to be discharged home from the hospital, while those with lower scores are more likely to go to a rehabilitation or nursing care facility, reports a paper in the January issue of The Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy.
National Institutes of Health scientists and their collaborators found that hepatitis B virus-associated acute liver failure-a rare condition that can turn fatal within days without liver transplantation-results from an uncommon encounter between a highly mutated HBV variant and an unusual immune response in the patient's liver that is mainly sustained by antibody-producing B cells.
