Retina Implant AG, a leading developer of subretinal implants for the visually impaired, today announced the opening of a new manufacturing plant to meet anticipated demand for their implants. The company's second human clinical trial will be expanding outside of Germany in early 2011 to European countries including the U.K. and Italy and discussions are underway for potential clinical trials in the United States and Asia. Also looking ahead, the new facility meets manufacturing capabilities required for CE mark approval.
Noting "PEPFAR has been criticized for its vertical or 'stove-piping' structure, with resources targeting a specific disease rather than working to strengthen the underlying health system," a study published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes "aimed to evaluate whether PEPFAR activities were associated with system-wide improvements in both proximal and distal indicators of health systems strengthening."
In a small clinical study with an anticancer drug that halts blood vessel growth, a handful of people with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) and hearing loss had restoration of hearing.
To control the three-dimensional shape of engineered tissue, researchers grow cells on tiny, sponge-like scaffolds. These devices can be implanted into patients or used in the lab to study tissue responses to potential drugs.
New research has shown that schemes that grant children with a life threatening illness a special wish have a positive impact on their and their family's wellbeing.
