Most patients receiving treatment for hypertension do not have their morning blood pressure levels controlled, and do not achieve smooth daytime control, researchers report.
In a randomized clinical trial of more than 300 participants, researchers from Johns Hopkins and elsewhere have found that ranibizumab — a drug most commonly used to treat retinal swelling in people with diabetes — is an effective alternative to laser therapy for treating the most severe, potentially blinding form of diabetic retinal disease. Results of the government-sponsored study also show that the drug therapy carries fewer side effects than the currently used laser treatment.
Patients who rely on pacemakers and defibrillators to maintain a normal heart rhythm run the risk of serious health complications if they don't fully understand how the devices work and what to do when they experience an irregular heartbeat.
The Canadian Cancer Society is pleased the Ontario government is suing tobacco companies to recover tobacco-related health care costs.
On August 8, e-cigarette regulations set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will go into effect. Under the new rules, vendors are banned from selling e-cigarettes to minors.
