The risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) by age 20 was 12 times as high in severely obese American Indian children 5 to 9 years of age as in normal-weight youth in that age range, according to a study titled "Long-term Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Youth with Increasing Severity of Obesity," presented today at the American Diabetes Association's 77th Scientific Sessions at the San Diego Convention Center.
"[W]hile sitting through events, debates and discussions in New York [at the Commission on the Status of Women meeting], my recurring thought was why, in 2013, are we still arguing over whether women should have ownership of their own bodies?" Liz Ford, deputy editor of the Guardian's global development website, asks in the newspaper's "Poverty Matters Blog."
The number of babies born as a result of assisted reproduction technologies (ART) has reached an estimated total of 5 million since the world's first, Louise Brown, was born in July 1978. The figures will be presented this week at the 28th annual meeting of ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology), which begins today, 1st July, in Istanbul, Turkey.
In a major breakthrough for future research and drug development, a team of Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) investigators developed a new, more reliable method for measuring protein synthesis and turnover, processes that are critical to understanding cellular functions.
