Facing challenges in their home state, top executives of Boston-based Partners HealthCare System told a national audience of investors Monday that they will create a bold "new medical model" by integrating hospitals and their medical services with insurance products and by drawing patients from across the country. Speaking at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, Partners' chief executive, Gary L. Gottlieb, said his organization, which owns Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women's hospitals in Boston, plans to improve medical care and lower costs by further expanding its network of community hospitals and primary care physicians in Eastern Massachusetts (Weisman, 1/14).
With antibiotic resistant infections on the rise and a scarce pipeline of novel drugs to combat them, researchers at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center are pursuing entirely new approaches to meet the challenge of drug-resistant infections by taming microbes rather than killing them.
River blindness and elephantiasis are debilitating diseases caused by parasitic worms that infect as many as 150 million people worldwide.
AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing cancer therapeutics, today announced data from a subgroup analysis of a Phase 2 randomized discontinuation trial showing that the median progression-free survival (PFS) achieved by patients with advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) who had undergone a prior nephrectomy was 14.8 months.
The Senate measure, which funds federal operations through the end of September, is expected to gain House approval. However, the Republican's budget plan for the next fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, proposes to slash health and safety net programs and underscores the sharp differences between the parties.
