Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that Ildong Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., has informed Arena that the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has approved BELVIQ (lorcaserin HCl) for marketing for weight management in South Korea. Ildong will market and distribute BELVIQ in South Korea under its marketing and supply agreement with Arena's wholly owned subsidiary, Arena Pharmaceuticals GmbH, or Arena GmbH.
"Since the eradication of smallpox in the late 1970s, no other diseases have followed suit; the goal that has come closest so far is eradication of polio," a Lancet Infectious Diseases editorial states, noting that in 2012 only about 250 people were infected with polio worldwide.
A study recently published in the American Journal of Managed Care found that more than half of primary care providers reported that they made what they considered unnecessary referrals to a specialist because patients requested it. Many physicians said they yielded to patient requests for brand-name drug prescriptions when cheaper generics were available.
Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease, infects more than 300 million people each year. Cooler highland regions have historically provided havens from malaria, but it has been predicted that the disease could be especially sensitive to climate change, since both the Plasmodium parasites that cause it and the Anopheles mosquitoes that spread it thrive at warm temperatures. The potential impact of global warming on the worldwide incidence of malaria has been debated for more than two decades.
