Professor Nick Macklon of Southampton University says even though most women now understand there is "overwhelming evidence" that smoking during pregnancy is harmful to the developing child, they continue to do so.
Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center is the first hospital in Arizona to perform a new nonsurgical heart valve replacement procedure, the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). TAVR valves are inserted via a catheter through the femoral artery, without requiring open heart surgery.
With a failure rate as high as 50 percent, bone tissue grafts pose a significant obstacle to orthopedic surgeons attempting to repair complex fractures or large areas of bone loss, such as those often caused by trauma and cancer. Current synthetic substitutes rarely possess the bone-like properties needed for successful grafting and are often difficult for surgeons to manipulate in the operating room. In response to these challenges, researchers at UMass Medical School have developed an easy-to-produce, inexpensive, synthetic bone material called FlexBone.
In recognition of efforts made in cancer therapeutic research, Joseph R. Bertino, MD, chief scientific officer at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, has been honored with The Jeffrey A.
