Atrial fibrillation, which is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, is an important risk factor for strokes.
Scientists have identified about two dozen genes that control embryonic stem cell fate. The genes may either prod or restrain stem cells from drifting into a kind of limbo, they suspect. The limbo lies between the embryonic stage and fully differentiated, or specialized, cells, such as bone, muscle or fat.
The College of American Pathologists was recognized by the Association for Talent Development, formerly ASTD, with an Excellence in Practice Award for its Laboratory Medical Director (LMD) Advanced Practical Pathology Program (AP3) in the Organizational Learning and Development category.
Beginning Sunday, Jan. 31 and continuing until Friday, Feb. 5, the spire atop Fifth Avenue Place will be illuminated red as the health insurer supports the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women" campaign. The campaign brings awareness to heart disease, the number one killer of women.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first clinical trial in humans of a new technology: Cornell Dots, brightly glowing nanoparticles that can light up cancer cells in PET-optical imaging.
