When a patient with chronic pain is experiencing symptoms, relief is only thing on their mind. NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can often provide that relief, however it's important to balance the potential benefits with the potential risks of these drugs.
For the first time, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) has been directly implicated in the pathophysiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although 5-HT is predominantly known as a neurotransmitter within the central nervous system, new evidence points to additional important functions for serotonin in the periphery.
Changes in working practice and the introduction of the EWTD have led to a much needed reduction in the number of hours junior doctors work. However it has also meant an increase in shift-working. Most full shift rotas require junior doctors to work seven consecutive, 13 hour night shifts, a practice the Royal College of Physicians recently recommended should be avoided.
Significant local and international variations in the diagnosis and treatment of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) stem at least in part from a "zone of ambiguity"-different interpretations of what is normal behavior and what level of impairment is required for a psychiatric diagnosis.
