Every year, 4 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in Europe. Advances in cancer treatment sometimes come at the cost of major adverse effects, and one of the most prominent is cardiotoxicity. Myocardial toxicity affects as many as 25% of patients undergoing treatment with commonly used anticancer drugs.
Rates of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, have risen by over 40 per cent in the past decade, making it the fastest rising cancer in the UK. Incidence of mouth, womb, and kidney cancers has also shown rapid increases in the last 10 years.
Antipsychotic drugs - which transformed mental health care following their chance discovery in the mid-20th Century - may finally be poised for a long-overdue makeover incorporating structure-based design.
Nearly anyone touched by ovarian cancer will tell you: it's devastating.
