A new multi-center study of 854 children with Crohn's disease shows a 5-year cumulative risk of bowel surgery is significantly lower than reported in recent studies. The findings of the study, led by Hasbro Children's Hospital, also indicate that children diagnosed between ages 13 and 16 had an increased risk of bowel surgery, and that a common treatment that begins at diagnosis, immunomodulator therapy, did not alter the risk of surgery.
A new study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) proves that the right kind of brain training can produce cognitive improvements that transfer to real-world skills. The study, available online and in the November 2010 issue of JAGS found that older drivers who completed 10 sessions of speed-of-processing training or reasoning training had an approximately 50 percent reduction in at-fault motor-vehicle collisions (MVC) compared to the control group.
Beginning April 1, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield will force their insured patients with primary immunodeficiency diseases and other rare disorders to switch their prescription to a single brand of immunoglobulin, regardless of their current IgG therapy.
LeVOCC, Inc. today announced that independent laboratory testing has conclusively demonstrated that the LeVOCCTM air purification system successfully destroys a strain of the H1N1 virus. Testing was conducted using the Puerto Rico 8 (PR8) strain of the H1N1 virus. This strain is an influenza A H1N1 seasonal strain and is a valid representative of all H1N1 strains.
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is making history. On April 6, CAMH is breaking ground on the next phase of its landmark redevelopment project, transforming the site of what was originally the 1850 Provincial Lunatic Asylum into a modern, welcoming 'urban village' in the heart of Queen Street West. Nothing quite like this has ever been done before.
