Merck said today that Travis County, Texas District Court Judge Scott H. Jenkins granted Merck's motion for summary judgment, dismissing all claims in a VIOXX-related lawsuit filed on behalf of the State of Texas.
Researchers at McGill University have discovered the cause of an inherited form of epilepsy. The disease, known as double-cortex syndrome, primarily affects females and arises from mutations on a gene located on the X chromosome. Drs. Susanne Bechstedt and Gary Brouhard of the Department of Biology have used a highly advanced microscope to discover how these mutations cause a malformation of the human brain.
Chikungunya virus, an infectious agent transmitted by mosquitoes, appears seldom to harm infants of mothers infected early in pregnancy, but can frequently cause serious problems, including lasting brain injury, in babies born to mothers who acquire the virus near the time of delivery, according to a study in PLoS Medicine.
The American College of Physicians today told U.S. Senate majority leader Harry Reid it applauds his efforts "in introducing legislation to address needed reforms in the wake of the Newtown, CT tragedy."
