The House chairwoman of the legislature's budget panel threatened Tuesday to scuttle new restrictions on health care for the poor sought by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's administration after learning patients were warned of changes before they had been enacted. Rep. Toni Walker, D-New Haven, who not only co-chairs the Appropriations Committee, but also an advisory panel conducting a hearing Tuesday on the changes, charged the Department of Social Services with overstepping its bounds.
Last week, "Nigeria launched a multi-year national plan for the control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTD Master Plan)," which "provides a platform for Nigeria to stimulate global efforts to reach elimination and control of diseases under the London Declaration and Millennium Development Goal 6," Mawish Raza, communications intern for the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), writes in the group's "End The Neglect" blog.
"Drug companies sharply raised prices last year, ahead of increased rebates they must pay to Medicaid and other expenses tied to the federal health overhaul passed last month. Prices for brand-name pharmaceuticals rose 9.1% last year, the biggest increase in at least a decade, according to pharmacy-benefit manager Express Scripts Inc."
Medicaid payments are coming under review by a new commission, American Medical News reports. "MACPAC was created by a provision of the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act, signed by President Obama in February 2009. The act instructs the panel to examine the effect of Medicaid pay and other factors on the access and quality of care received by Medicaid and CHIP enrollees." Kaiser Family Foundation executive Diane Rowland will chair the panel. The panel has not yet gained federal funding (Trapp, 1/25).
In Virginia, one member of the panel charged with exploring the idea of expanding the health insurance program for people with low incomes said any broadening of the program was unlikely to happen in the near future. In Mississippi, many low-income people will soon realize they won't be eligible for Medicaid because the state opted against the expansion.
