The drug bevacizumab, also known by the trade name Avastin, shrinks tumors briefly in patients with an aggressive brain cancer known as glioblastoma multiforme, but then they often grow again and spread throughout the brain for reasons no one previously has understood. Now, Mayo Clinic researchers have found out why this happens.
Although bone marrow transplants have long been standard for acute leukemia, current treatments still rely on exact matches between donor and patient. Now, scientists at the University of Perugia, Italy, and the Weizmann Institute of Science have improved on a method of transplanting bone marrow-based stem cells from a mismatched donor, making it safer for use when no exact match exists.
A laboratory study (in vitro) and an animal study, which are currently being presented at the 9th World Congress of the International Cartilage Repair Society, demonstrate that Artelon functions as a scaffold for cells in conjunction with cartilage repair.
The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) has created a new award to recognize healthcare CEOs and administrators that support infection prevention and control efforts throughout their facilities. The new APIC Healthcare Administrator Award will honor a member of a healthcare facility's executive team (CEO, COO, CFO, CMO, CNO) who has demonstrated significant and sustained support of the organization's infection prevention team.
