Metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes appear to share risk factors with and may influence the development of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, according to several reports published in the March issue of Archives of Neurology.
Over 100,000 practitioners now have access to Best Practice, the latest product from the BMJ Evidence Centre, which provides information for healthcare professionals at the point of care. It has been adopted by over 250 institutions in 25 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.
For decades the amyloid hypothesis has dominated the research field in Alzheimer's disease. The theory describes how an increase in secreted beta-amyloid peptides leads to the formation of plaques, toxic clusters of damaged proteins between cells, which eventually result in neurodegeneration. Scientists at Lund University, Sweden, have now presented a study that turns this premise on its head.
Attorney General Cameron Dick has protested against the seven year sentence awarded to Dr. Jayant Patel on grounds that it is inadequate and fails to do justice to the seriousness of the crime. He said, "The grounds of this appeal are that these sentences are inadequate in all the circumstances and fail to reflect the gravity of the offences."
