As waves of hospitals move from older methods of record keeping to new digital electronic health record (EHR) systems, many medical professionals express fears that implementing an EHR system in their hospital will have dire results, including more errors and higher patient mortality.
Last week, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee sent the Water for the World Act (S 641) to the Senate for a floor vote, and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs is set to vote on a companion bill, the Senator Paul Simon Water for the World Act of 2012 (HR 3658), PSI's "Healthy Lives" blog notes, adding that "a coalition of CEOs of NGOs have published an open letter encouraging the House Foreign Affairs Committee to allow the bill to be voted upon in the House floor."
Aeras, a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing vaccines against tuberculosis (TB), today announced the publication of the full results from a Phase 2, randomized, controlled clinical trial of two TB vaccines- the currently available BCG vaccine and an investigational vaccine, H4:IC31-in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).
Cells from individuals with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) were found to have higher than expected rates of methylation at specific sites on their DNA, when compared to cells from healthy individuals without MDD, according to a study by a multidisciplinary team of UC San Francisco scientists, in collaboration with others.
A new study by the Translational Genomics Research Institute details the design and validation of a low-cost, rapid and highly accurate screening tool - known as KlebSeq - for potentially deadly healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs), such as Klebsiella pneumoniae.
