The University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center will be hosting 12 science and technology tours Sept. 21 in conjunction with the G20 Pittsburgh Summit Sept. 24-25. These tours of cutting-edge research and development will help explain how and why the "eds and meds" sector of Pittsburgh's economy has become a powerful driver of the region's success.
Can the temperature of the food we eat affect the intensity of its taste? It depends on the taste, according to a new study by Dr. Gary Pickering and colleagues from Brock University in Canada. Their work shows that changes in the temperature of foods and drinks have an effect on the intensity of sour, bitter and astringent (e.g. cranberry juice) tastes but not sweetness. Their work is published online in Springer's Chemosensory Perception journal.
Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, with funding from DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration, have devised ways to improve the performance of radiation detectors, such as those used by law enforcement agencies to locate and identify radioactive material.
