Texas Children's Hospital is the nation's first pediatric hospital to discharge a child while on an intracorporeal ventricular assist device (VAD), a feat previously accomplished only at adult institutions. The patient, 16-year-old Francisco "Frank" De Santiago, who was implanted with a mechanical heart pump called the HeartMate II on May 19, 2009, was discharged on Oct. 29, 2009.
U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship Chair Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., today commented on the President's signing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The Act, passed by the U.S. House of Representatives Sunday evening, lowers costs and increases choices and stability for small businesses.
Modern Healthcare: "Since passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act early last year, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has had its hands full doing what its name implies—stage managing a massive national health IT promotional production.
"A stakeholder consultation convened by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva has reviewed recent epidemiological studies related to HIV transmission and acquisition by women using hormonal contraceptives," a UNAIDS press statement reports.
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) have joined 17 other surgical organizations in opposing the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act" introduced by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
