Four researchers from UCLA's Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research have received Early Translational Research Awards totaling approximately $13 million from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the state's stem cell agency. The UCLA researchers received four of the 12 total awards; no other institution received more than one.
TriLink BioTechnologies, Inc. today announced that a multi-year distribution and supply agreement has been signed with California-based Affymetrix, Inc., a leading supplier of genetic analysis technologies. Under the terms of agreement, Affymetrix will use TriLink's high quality oligonucleotides in several of their kits.
The public health problem that needs to be addressed next is the epidemic of pain, according to pain medicine physicians who have come together to discuss the latest in pain research and treatment at the 24th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), February 12-16 at the Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee (Orlando), Florida.
NexMed, Inc., a specialty CRO and a developer of products based on the NexACT® technology, today announced that pre-clinical results from its research and development group at Bio-Quant successfully demonstrated the ability of the NexACT technology to deliver an oral formulation of Taxol® (paclitaxel) and to enhance the drug's bioavailability by approximately ten-fold through this oral administration. Taxol, a first line chemotherapy drug used to treat breast, lung and ovarian cancers, is currently administered through an intravenous infusion that can take up to 24 hours to complete.
Being female and living in a rural area are among several factors that predicted whether an elderly person with depression recovered over the course of a year, finds a recent study in Depression Research and Treatment. Additional risk factors included having high levels of stress, being chronically ill and having a low estimate of one's own mental health.
