Nature News reports on an immunization campaign kicking off in Africa in December that will offer protection to some areas of Africa's meningitis belt. Millions will receive a new vaccine, MenAfriVac, that promises protection against the meningococcal bacterium Neisseria meningitides, the news service writes, noting the effort is the culmination of ten years' work by an international consortium to develop a vaccine at a price low enough for massive use in Africa: just US$0.40 a dose.
Atrial fibrillation is a cardiac arrhythmia - a chronic irregularity of heartbeat - which affects an estimated 1 million people in Germany. Although the condition is not acutely life-threatening, it does increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses, such as cardiac insufficiency, stroke and dementia. In the third of a series of genomewide asssociation studies, an international team of researchers, led by LMU physician PD Dr. Stefan K-b, now reports the identification of a new gene locus that has a significant influence on risk for atrial fibrillation.
The ancient physician/alchemist, Paracelsus, said: "The dose makes the poison." According to a new study published in PeerJ, even oxygen may fall prey to the above adage. While essential to human life, aspects of oxygen metabolism may promote cancer. Capitalizing on the inverse relationship of oxygen concentration with elevation, researchers found lower rates of lung cancer at higher elevations, a trend that did not extend to non-respiratory cancers, suggesting that carcinogen exposure occurs via inhalation.
HCL Infosystems, India's premier information technology company and Wellogic, a renowned healthcare interoperability and point-of-care solutions provider, today announced that they are working together to create India's National Health Information Exchange Environment (INHIEE), and seeding adoption via Wellogic's world-class portal, electronic health record (EHR), and personal health record (PHR) solutions.
