The New York Times reports that "Federal health officials are preparing a plan to study a bold new strategy to stop the spread of the AIDS virus: routinely testing virtually every adult in a community, and promptly treating those found to be infected.
Drug company Novo Nordisk's decision to pull its Mixtard 30 insulin drug from the UK could add 9 million to the NHS drugs bill in England alone, says an editorial in the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin (DTB). The decision could also leave thousands of patients dependent on others to help them take their insulin, says DTB, which today launches its "Don't Drop Mixtard 30" campaign to convince the company to change its mind.
The success of blood stem cell transplants used to treat diseases such as leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma and aplastic anemia may soon become more predictable, thanks to a discovery made by researchers at the University of British Columbia.
Researchers in the biological sciences department in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary have revealed how white blood cells move to infection or inflammation in the body; findings which could help lead to developing drug therapies for immune system disorders.
