More than one billion people worldwide live with a physical or mental disability, with 80 percent of those people living in developing countries, according to the first world report on disability, published by the WHO and World Bank on Thursday, the Guardian reports.
Twenty-six scientists have received a total of $2.06 million in grants from the National Psoriasis Foundation to study psoriasis—the most common autoimmune disease in the country, affecting as many as 7.5 million Americans—and psoriatic arthritis, an inflammatory joint and tendon disease.
Among women with high-risk early breast cancer, the use of tailored dose-dense chemotherapy compared with standard adjuvant chemotherapy did not result in a statistically significant improvement in breast cancer recurrence-free survival, and nonhematologic toxic effects were more frequent in the tailored dose-dense group, according to a study appearing in the November 8 issue of JAMA.
"Although we're several days into sequestration, details about the full impact of funding cuts are still hazy," Kim Lufkin, communications officer of the Global Health Technologies Coalition, writes in the group's "Breakthroughs" blog, noting, "On [March 1], the Office of Management and Budget released a report to Congress, which details funding cuts required to offset $85 billion in the fiscal year 2013 budget."
