HIV attacks the immune system by infecting and killing helper T lymphocytes (also called CD4 T cells), the white blood cells responsible for mobilizing the mediators of an immune response.
Researchers at the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego, have found one reason that pancreatic cancer tumors are so difficult to treat with drugs. They have shown how a molecular switch steps up pancreatic cancer cell survival as well as resistance to a standard chemotherapy drug, and have identified alternate routes cancer cells take to avoid the effects of the therapy.
Today UBM Canon announces the expansion of its educational events aimed at the medical technology sector, with new 'Innovation' seminars being held this February, 2013. The seminars, named MedTech Innovate Seminars, will run concurrently with the MD&M West Conference and Exhibition, one of the largest medical design and manufacturing events in the world.
One of the mysteries of blindness has been solved. A team of international scientists in collaboration with the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI MUHC) identified a new gene responsible for Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), a devastating genetic form of blindness in newborns.
