Catamaran Corporation, a leading provider of pharmacy benefit management (PBM) services and technology solutions, announced today the completion, effective as of April 8, 2015, of its previously disclosed acquisition of Healthcare Solutions, for a purchase price of $405 million in cash, subject to certain customary post-closing adjustments. The purchase price was funded from Catamaran's existing cash balance.
Genzyme Corporation (Nasdaq: GENZ) announced today that the FDA's Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee voted 9 to 3 that a randomized, controlled trial is needed to support the currently proposed label expansion for Clolar® (clofarabine) in adult myeloid leukemia (AML). The committee found that the single-arm clinical study results submitted to support the label expansion showed Clolar was an active agent in acute AML patients, but concluded that a randomized clinical trial should be necessary to better interpret Clolar's efficacy and safety in the proposed patient population.
A blood test used to measure patterns of ribonucleic acid (RNA) expression can help determine if fever in infants under 2 months old is caused by bacterial or viral infection, according to a preliminary study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Researchers at the University of Minnesota have created a new lab-grown blood vessel replacement that is composed completely of biological materials, but surprisingly doesn't contain any living cells at implantation. The vessel, that could be used as an "off the shelf" graft for kidney dialysis patients, performed well in a recent study with nonhuman primates.
New cancer drugs allow doctors to tailor treatment based on the genetic profile of a patient's tumor. However, these drugs don't work at all in some patients, and they lose their effectiveness in others.
