Scientists have found that the fat cells and tissues of morbidly obese people and animals can reach a limit in their ability to store fat appropriately. Beyond this limit several biological processes conspire to prevent further expansion of fat tissue and in the process may trigger other health problems.
Adding to the clinical benefits and improved patient outcomes associated with minimally-invasive surgery (MIS), Medtronic plc today highlighted new data demonstrating that patients who underwent minimally invasive colon resection procedures were able to leave the hospital faster, visit their doctors less for follow up care and take fewer medicines than those who underwent open surgery.
Many people think the success of dieting, seemingly a national obsession following the excesses and resolutions of the holiday season, depends mostly on how hard one tries - on willpower and dedication. While this does matter, new research has found that a much more subtle aspect of the diets themselves can also have a big influence on the pounds shed - namely, the perceived complexity of a diet plan's rules and requirements.
A study from Northwestern Medicine and the American College of Surgeons published today in JAMA suggests that penalizing hospitals for patient readmissions following surgery may be ineffective, and even counterproductive, for improving the quality of hospital care in America.
