A new study exploring the growing worldwide problem of nitrogen pollution from soils to the sea shows that global ratios of nitrogen and carbon in the environment are inexorably linked, a finding that may lead to new strategies to help mitigate regional problems ranging from contaminated waterways to human health.
Recent research has shown that cancer cells have a much different - and more complex - metabolism than normal cells. Now, scientists at The University of Texas at Dallas have found that exploiting these differences might provide a new strategy to combat lung cancer.
Humans and other mammals show particularly intensive sleeping patterns during puberty. The brain also matures fastest in this period. But when pubescent rats are administered caffeine, the maturing processes in their brains are delayed. This is the result of a study supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Parents know the joy when their child begins to lift their head, starts to turn over, say their first word and begins to read. For the family of a child who suffers from a developmental delay or disorder what happens after this discovery is not always simple. In many cases seeing a professional can be challenging.
