The Ministry of Health in Indonesia has confirmed an additional three cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. All three cases were fatal.
Radiotherapy effectively damages brain tumors but the cancer cells can repair themselves in order to live on. Now, researchers at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center have tested a strategy that combines radiotherapy with a drug that shuts down the ability of tumor to mend themselves.
The growing concern surrounding the release of radiation from an earthquake and tsunami-stricken nuclear complex in Japan has raised fears of radiation exposure to populations in North America from the potential plume of radioactivity crossing the Pacific Ocean.
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have found that a chemical commonly used in the production of such medical plastic devices as intravenous (IV) bags and catheters can impair heart function in rats.
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and AstraZeneca today announced the commencement of the "Saxagliptin Assessment of Vascular Outcomes Recorded in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus" trial, a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 4 study, to evaluate treatment with ONGLYZA™ (saxagliptin), a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, in adult type 2 diabetes patients with cardiovascular risk factors.
