In a new study published in the journal Cell, scientists have found that koala DNA is protected against attack by retroviruses by a special type of immune response, which distinguishes foreign DNA from the host genome and destroys it before it can proliferate. This finding could help us understand both how koalas survive these infections, and the mechanics of adaptive gene change.
Materialise announced that it would lend its considerable expertise in virtual surgical planning to researcher Dr. J. B. Jupiter, Chief Hand and Upper Extremity Service at Massachusetts General Hospital. Through an AO funded, IRB approved study, Dr. Jupiter will use SurgiCase(R) Orthopaedics to explore the advantages of computer-assisted surgery, virtual 3D planning and intra-operative use of patient-specific surgical guides in osteotomies to correct compound wrist fractures-the first research project of its kind.
One July evening, Carol Harnett was in a crosswalk in downtown Portland, Ore., when a driver made an illegal turn and hit her. Transported by ambulance to a hospital, she was diagnosed with a severely sprained right ankle and left wrist, as well as a concussion.
Treatments targeted to enhance brain neurotrophic factor signaling could improve memory functions in Alzheimer's disease even though they don't alter brain amyloid burden, according to recent research from the University of Eastern Finland.
