Fixing or replacing faulty genes has emerged as a key to unlocking cures for numerous devastating diseases. But if the new, engineered genes can't find their way into the patient's genomic sequence, they won't help.
The Ebola virus (EBOV), variant Makona, was the causative agent of the 2014-2016 West African epidemic that took over 11,000 lives and infected nearly 30,000 people. But with the combination of globally-supported containment efforts, health experts were able to track the spread of the outbreak, as well as use precautionary and quarantine procedures.
A total of 47 people have been infected with Salmonella Kiambu infections from 12 different states as of 21st July 2017, reports the CDC. Of these, 12 have had to be hospitalized and one person from New York City succumbed to the infection. Maradol papayas have been found to be the likely source of this infection and the CDC has recommended people not to consume these until its clear.
UCLA researchers have found that people involved in electric scooter accidents are sometimes injured badly enough - from fractures, dislocated joints and head injuries - to require treatment in an emergency department.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved the MemoryShape Breast Implant to increase breast size (augmentation) for use in women at least 22 years old and to rebuild breast tissue (reconstruction) in women of any age.
