HHS has announced $6.78 million to develop innovative approaches to provide care for people with Alzheimer's disease and support for their family caregivers.
The bacteria that caused the Black Death or plague, which wiped out millions in mid-14th century Europe, may be extinct, according to a new study. The Black Death claimed the lives of one-third of Europeans in just five years from 1348 to 1353. Until recently, it was not certain whether the bacterium Yersinia pestis - known to cause the plague today - was responsible for that most deadly outbreak of disease ever. Now, the University of Tübingen's Institute of Scientific Archaeology and McMaster University in Canada have been able to confirm that Yersinia pestis was behind the great plague.
The WHO on Friday issued a measles warning for Europe, where measles outbreaks "have caused nine deaths, including six in France, and 7,288 hospitalizations," BBC News reports.
Neighborhood factors do not influence the use of emergency medical services (EMS) for stroke as strongly as individual factors do, despite earlier indications that socio-demographic characteristics of the neighborhood explain low rates of EMS activation for this life-threatening emergency.
