The first anniversary is approaching of the March, 2011, earthquake and tsunami that devastated Fukushima, Japan, and later this year debris from that event should begin to wash up on U.S. shores - and one question many have asked is whether that will pose a radiation risk.
Adiponectin, a collagen-like protein secreted by fat cells, derives from the ADIPOQ gene. Variations in this gene may increase risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and various cancers. A new study that links specific variations in the ADIPOQ gene to either higher or lower colorectal cancer risk is published in Genetic Testing and Molecular Biomarkers, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.
Ahead of a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing Tuesday, Rajiv Shah, President Barack Obama's nominee for USAID administrator, submitted "a long list of detailed answers to questions" and "weighed in on a number of substantive issues while deferring to the ongoing reviews at both State and the [National Security Council] NSC when it came to matters related to the structure of USAID and its relationship with the State Department," Foreign Policy's blog "The Cable" reports.
