Global Post examines how the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is impacting HIV/AIDS care and human rights in El Salvador. The article profiles Carla, a Salvadorian transvestite who tested positive for HIV in jail and was able to receive anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment through a program supported by the Global Fund, which the article calls a "revolutionary model."
In one of the largest adult vaccine clinical trials ever, researchers have found that an experimental vaccine against shingles (zoster vaccine) prevented about half of cases of shingles-a painful nerve and skin infection-and dramatically reduced its severity and complications in vaccinated persons who got the disease. The findings appear in the June 2 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
In the first of a series titled "Imagine a world...," posted on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's "Impatient Optimists" blog, Paula Franklin, U.K. medical director for Marie Stopes International, writes, "For the most part, only people who really need or want something care much about it being available, and that's why it can be hard to make people in the developed world tune in to the huge unmet need for contraception globally - 222 million people who want to use contraception can't get it, at the last count."
Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Co., Inc. and Hisamitsu U.S., Inc. today announced the completion of their acquisition of Noven Pharmaceuticals, Inc. pursuant to a short form merger of Northstar Merger Sub, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Hisamitsu U.S., Inc., with and into Noven.
