In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on Aug. 6, an international team led by Igor Roninson, of the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina, reported the development of a new class of drugs that may prove useful in the treatment of cancer and aging-associated disorders.
Prompted by an inquiry from GlobalPost, U.S. officials have said the Obama administration called for a $550 million reduction - an 11 percent cut - for its global AIDS program in its FY 2013 budget request because the "government didn't need more money because there has been nearly $1.5 billion stuck in the pipeline for 18 months or more," GlobalPost reports.
PharmAbcine, a specialized biotech company focused on the development of fully-human monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases, announced that is has received $6 million USD in a Series A financing. OrbiMed's Caduceus Asia Partners and Novartis Korea Venture Fund co-led the round, with additional participation from an international syndicate including Green Cross, Tong Yang and Saehan Venture Fund.
Human cells have an intrinsic capacity to destroy HIV. However, the virus has evolved to contain a gene that blocks this ability. When this gene is removed from the virus, the innate human immune system destroys HIV by mutating it to the point where it can no longer survive.
From the time presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt first discussed health care reform in 1912, the topic has been a precedent-setting issue in the U.S. The 2010 passage of health care legislation is no different, but has many Americans in a quandary about how it will affect them.
